The Burnes Center for Social Change proudly congratulates Santiago “Santi” Garces—our AI for Impact Technical Lead, Senior Fellow, and Lecturer at Northeastern’s Khoury College of Computer Sciences—on being named one of Government Technology’s Top 25 Doers, Dreamers & Drivers for Spring 2025.

In his concurrent role as Chief Information Officer for the City of Boston, Santi has been at the forefront of integrating generative AI into public service. Under his leadership, Boston issued interim generative AI guidance within six months of the technology’s rise to prominence, encouraging staff to explore these tools responsibly. This proactive approach has set a precedent for other cities to follow.

Santi’s commitment to human-centered design and technological innovation has led to significant improvements in city services. Notably, his team developed a digital solution that streamlined the process for parents to obtain birth certificates for school enrollment, eliminating the need for in-person visits and fees.

Beyond his municipal achievements, Santi’s work at the Burnes Center involves guiding students in applying AI and human-centered design to tackle public sector challenges. His dedication to making government more effective and equitable exemplifies the mission of the Burnes Center.

Congratulations, Santi!
